      do you make home made ketchup? I've look at quite a few recipe's and it calls for a LOT of ingredients (mostly spices) so I buy it myself even though I have lots of tomatoes...so i'm interested in your recipe. do you share?

    I learned something that I feel everyone should know..when you cut a fresh onion, cut a inch from the root end, take a plastic water bottle and cut the first 2-inches off the top, fill with water and place the root end of the onion on top -I use 4-toothpicks to keep suspended so not to fall in the water,the roots touching the water will grow fresh roots and new onion greens -these will be your onion sets so you literally never have to buy onions again by using this method hope that made sense? I use a lot of fresh onions in my house since learning this I have tried it 4-times each time learning more..if not enough toothpicks it will fall in the water, if not enough onion itself it will rot..I have 6-new onion starts right now so far from 2-onions..If nothing else I have fresh green onion that I can use fresh or fry and powder for my seasoning blends or just onion powder instead of throwing out onion peels and onion ends. I love learning this new to me tip..Hth..

      I actually made a video on this topic years and years ago. The problem I have is that the onion greens do regrow but the onion white and root start to rot, no matter how careful I am. so the white goes bad and then I have to toss the whole thing. Personally I'd rather buy the green onion and plant the white to get a big onion. that works too. I'm surprised that you can make this last for years. I'd love to see you do a video on it.

      @@OldSchoolPrepper ~I will look at your old videos 🤗 I don’t know if the white of the onion off the 2-remaining plants are rotted this is all new to me so not years..lol..try a month..I think if the onion is sitting in the water that it will rot..I have 1 that is doing real well and I think it’s because only the roots are in the water..once they start growing the actual onion is suspended..does that make sense? I also though about letting the root side of the onion sit for a few days to dry then start the process since even dry roots will grow once wet I think..maybe this will better the chances of not rotting🤔

    Hello. Just found this video! I have been making vinegar for three years now and I have never had a solid mother. However, looking through my old jars I found 2 that had a thin mother. One from 2022 and one from 2023. . is she still alive? Should I take her out and put her in fresh vinegar? I was shocked, as I have never had a mother before. Thank you for any advice you can give, and thank you for your videos!

      if she is still the color of the vinegar or lighter and not smelling bad then she's probably still alive....definetly move her into a new batch of something (wine, fruit vinegar, fruit juice). see if she perks up...i suspect you are a proud new parent of a mother!

    Woo hoo, found mouse melons along the fence again and spreading. Maybe will be ripe starting 1-2 weeks. Cute little things. Never had them before a couple years ago so must have been planted by birds. Bought new pots to get the now wild blackberries started. So happy to have found mine again. Things were going on so didn't get to the pecans soon enough and the constant rains have rotted them this year. None left in the freezer. We had an invasive weed that that has taken over the yard killing most of the St. Augustine grass. Yes, put out weed and feed but it's feeding and not weeding. Hoping some garlic and wild onion come back. Worried why the honeysuckle hasn't bloomed this summer. Anyway, that's the natural edibles in the backyard. There is cactus down the road but people are getting rid of it.

    And this is why you have multiple fruits in your orchard. Some years you just won't get fruit from some trees. Another reason to thin in my location is the fruit rubbing together facilitates and encourages damage and rot. Last year was a banner year for apples but I got no pears and only a handful of peaches. This year, the peaches and pears are outstanding and I have 1, yes just 1, apple. I'm also on the verge of losing one pear and apple tree to fire blight. It came in with a vengeance this year and the young trees aren't standing a chance with this extreme heat and drought

    More bone meal under the apple tree from the trunk to the drip line perhaps . More bio char and wood ash as well when just coming out of being dormant . Taking off some apples helps as well . I have noticed that when apple trees have access to the wood ash and bone meal helps with weakness . All so a water source near by that the roots can reach helps a great deal ! . Ya peaches are a hit or miss with the weather . This may get me some boos but when i see fruit trees unpruned from the very beginning of planting they give the best production . Cleaning off the dead is a for sure . I lost my apricot blooms due to cold ! Great channel you have and i hope this info finds you well . Cheers fellow earthling

    I thought leaf dieback was a lot less and slower than this? Like I thought the older ones would take weeks/months to turn yellow/brown and die? Mine have this exact look to them just about once a week after trimming off the last. I’ve also noticed the tiny females squashes are turning yellow and dying simultaneously. I added fertilizer and specifically calcium thinking it’s blossom end rot. But honestly this video makes me think this is natural and they just aren’t putting out enough energy to the babies because of the older leaves. I’m going to stay on top of trimming and reevaluate after 2 weeks. Thank you!

      when the hotter weather hits, this happens like crazy. RE: the babies dying, I suspect it is because they are not getting fertilized...do you have bees? people often think blossom end rot when it's a fertilization issue...check out this video for some pics: ua-cam.com/video/NIBGAHe24Ew/v-deo.html

      @@OldSchoolPrepper I’m well versed in hand pollination. I have years of gardening experience and research. Thank you tho. The babies turn yellow before fully even opening a flower. In fact the stem looks a bit pale yellow too. Tried calcium and all the rest. Bottom leaves yellow and brown edges like they are just getting old fast. I have to fertilize the ground every 7 days because we get lots of rain and flooding. I’m at a loss. Last year this happened and only a few plants produced. I also have giant issues with vine borers but I’ve been on top of it, even picking off dozens of eggs a day. My climate and yard space has every imaginable disease, weather problems, pest problems, nutrient deficiency. It’s not a good space, I’ve even tried container gardens and purchased truckloads of topsoil and compost. Curcubits seem to be the worst along with root veggies not bulbing at all, except radishes. The soil kits don’t seem to test properly. Next I’m going to send a sample to the location extension, but it’s 99$!!!

    For tomatoes, no urine until it bears tiny green fruits... then apply urine. Before fruiting, urine will increase foliage and not much fruit.

    • @OldSchoolPrepper
      @OldSchoolPrepper 4 дні тому

      hi Joe...I have heard that soooooo many times. I keep ignoring that advice and doing some testing around it but that advice doesn't bare fruit (ha ha see what I did there). I've done this experimet for 5 years and each year the Urine & Urine with WoodAsh keeps on producing more than the control and Miracle Grow. I've even used the urine fertilizer until fruit started then I stopped it....I get more fruit from these plants than I do from my raised beds and inground gardens. I grow a lot of food. I know that what you are saying is what they teach, also they teach nitrogen until the fruiting starts and stop fertilizig at that time..but it just doesn't work out that way. Try it yourself and see or stay tuned and measure your output up against mine.

    I hope you do not mind my off topic posts and more posts prob help youtube score. I freeze my tomatos similar to you, but I puree them and freeze them in 1 gal bags (~ 4.5 pounds each). I need to thaw them out for freeze drying. I think it would take forever thawing in the fridge. If I thaw them in a bucket like do, how long can they sit in 80° before they degrade too much ? Again they are puree Ice blocks fully frozen.

    • @OldSchoolPrepper
      @OldSchoolPrepper 7 днів тому

      I would take a strainer/colander and put it at the top of a 5 gallon bucket...so the tomato water strains into the bottom...that way you are just left with the tomato meat. Much faster to thaw and dry. you can remove the skin easy or leave...up to you. I'm making an educated guess but i'd start thawing in the evening and by morning they'll be done so you have all day to dry. tomatoes have a lot of acid so they should be ok for a while at room temp...they also have sugar so before they started to rot they would start to ferment...I don't think that would hurt you at all. I bet it would take a couple or more for them to start rotting. I think you are good Mike.

    Do you know if a vacuum sealer can seal tattler lids ?

      hi Mike, I don't see why they wouldn't seal Tattler lids...the lids are thicker for sure but I think that would be ok...you might need to warm up the rubber ring a bit (maybe in some hot water then dry) just to make it playable. That said I've never done it myself.

    You gonna clone it? I started doing that last year and it works great to keep the fresh basil going all season long

    Is black floating substance is harmful? Can we skim off it and use it?

      black? Black, gray, pink, and/or fuzzy are all bad...it's generally mold and once I see it, I dump it. Some people will say you can just skim off mold but I think that mold doesn't just grow on top of things, I think it invades the whole product and is everywhere...so not good, yes it's harmful, not don't skim it just toss it and start over.
